Twitter push comes to shove

July 09th, 2009 | Category: Breaking News, Twitter

We have been watching with interest how some brands have utilised Twitter as a viral marketing tool. One UK company, Moonfruit who offer free web build tools, decided to offer 10 MacBook Pro computers to Twitterers who included the #moonfruit tag in their tweets. And the crowd went wild. In a couple of days, #moonfruit was the Top Trend topic and at its peak, the moonfruit initiative collated to 2.5 percent of all twitterings. Then all of a sudden, #moonfruit was dropped from the top trends and seemingly given the chop by Twitter who had decided that they’d had their share of Moonfruit. (You get one bad apple and look what happens). As far as we are aware, no Twitter spokesperson has come forward to comment on the enforced ‘hush-up’. But it’s the best example we’ve seen of Twitter viral marketing yet.

Looks like Twitter weren’t too pleased at this hogging of the airwaves
